Connect 09

If you have read the current issue of Southern Cross, or perhaps this week’s newspapers, you will be aware of the Archbishop’s vision to see the bible put into the hands of all Sydney-siders. This vision is set to move closer to reality through the “Connect 09” program that has just been approved at Synod.
The word of God changes lives. Many, many people have come to Christ simply by reading the Bible & the aim of the “Connect 09” program is to make it possible for many more to do the same by making the Scriptures available to them.
Some have expressed concern that Bible “give-aways” in the past have resulted in huge amounts of wastage, as people have simply thrown them away. On top of this, our society is moving further and further away from seeing books as a helpful method of communication.
This is why the “Connect O9” program is to be much more than a “dump and run” program. The aim is to provide the opportunity for local churches (such as our own) to work together to make connections with people in their area that up until now they have had no link with. Far from simply throwing a bible at people, the hope is that this co-operative effort will put the Bible on people’s agenda, providing a “foot in the door” for Christians to share God’s word with them. This will be greatly aided by the “Jesus – all about life” TV advertising campaign that is planned to run at the same time.
On top of this, it will not simply be printed bibles that are able to be given out – MP3’s, CD’s and DVD’s of the scripture will also be available for those to whom books are less effective.
This is a great opportunity for us to make a mark in our local community. We already have links with people in our area through schools, social & sporting clubs etc; this will give us the chance to use those relationships to help people get their hands on the life-giving word of God.
