A Friend Indeed

I’m sure you’ve heard the story of the two friends who were out hunting in the northern U.S. Suddenly one yelled and the other looked up to see a grizzly charging them. The first started to frantically put on his tennis shoes and his friend anxiously asked, “What are you doing? Don’t you know you can’t outrun a grizzly bear?” “I don’t have to outrun a grizzly. I just have to outrun you!”
Not much of a friend, I’m sure you’ll agree!
Today, we’ll be considering what it is that makes a good friend from the book of Proverbs. We will see that “a friend loves at all times” (17:17); that a wise friend will make you grow wise (13:20) & even that the “wounds from a friend can be trusted” (27:6).
However, to really understand what a friend is like, we need to look at Jesus. Even though we had made ourselves his enemies, he was prepared to give his own life to save us. You can see the self-giving nature of a true friend when he says, “greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Now he says, “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends” (15:15).
What a great privilege to be the friend of the Son of God! And now, as we have experienced true friendship, we are able to show true friendship to others.
