Social Action Group

There has been a lot of noise recently, emanating from our Parish Weekend Away, regarding how Christians should respond to some of the “Big Issues” facing our world (poverty, injustice & the environment). However, there is no point making noise if we don’t translate it into action. As a result, Parish Council has decided to start up a “Social Action Group”, to make sure this translation happens.

The goal of the “Social Action Group” will be to look at the possible ways that we as a church, and as individuals, can live out Jesus’ command to “love our neighbours as ourselves” through social action. Kirsten Taylor, from the 7pm service, is currently gathering a group of people who will help drive these initiatives.

Over the last 3 weeks, I have been listing some of the things that we as individuals can do in each of these areas. Here are some things we might consider doing together:

Regarding Poverty – Help out in “soup kitchens” in the inner city; run a garage sale to raise money and awareness for the poor; support “Blessed to Bless”, or other charitable organizations; visit “Crossroads” in our holidays to help distribute goods to those in need.

Regarding Injustice – become a “Fair Trade” church; pray together for persecuted Christians; Support foreign missionaries who work among the poor (eg orphanage in Nepal).

Regarding the Environment – install solar cells on the church roof; conduct “Earth Church” or “Walk to church Sunday”; join in with “Clean Up Australia”

These are just some of the ideas the “Social Action Group” will consider. So if you would like to join this group, please see Kirsten or Steve ASAP.
