God Has Spoken

Sometimes it can seem like God is the “strong silent type”. Certainly it must have seemed that way to Job as he cried out to God over and over again, yet heard no reply.
Well, fortunately for Job, God is not like that. In fact, although he is under no obligation to do so, God goes out of his way to reveal himself to Job and to us. In Job 38-42, God speaks out of the storm to remind Job that he is still in control of all things and that he can be trusted, no matter what he is going through.
Now, we may not have God speak to us out of a storm (though he’s had plenty of opportunities to do that over the last few weeks!), but we have something even better. We have God’s word, freely available to us at any time of the day or night – I speak of course of the bible.
What a great privilege it is for us to be able to come into God’s presence at any time to be reminded of the very things Job is told – that God is in control no matter what the circumstances of our life, that he loves us no matter what we’ve done, & that he is always working for our good no matter how it seems.
I thought you might like this poem by Amos Wells, which challenges us to make the time to consistently read God’s word:
When I read the Bible Through
“I supposed I knew my Bible, reading piecemeal, hit or miss,
Now a bit of John or Matthew, now a snatch of Genesis,
Certain chapters of Isaiah, certain Psalms (the twenty-third),
Twelfth of Romans, first of Proverbs; yes, I thought I knew the Word!
But I found that thorough reading was a different thing to do,
And the way was unfamiliar when I read the Bible through.
…..
You who like to play at Bible, dip and dabble, here and there,
Just before you kneel aweary, and yawn through a hurried prayer;
You who treat the Crown of Writings as you treat no other book,
Just a paragraph, disjointed, just a crude, impatient look —
Try a worthier procedure, try a broad and steady view;
You will kneel in very rapture when you read the Bible through.”
