Between a Rock and a Hard Place

The expression “Stuck between a rock and a hard place” describes the situation where you are trapped between two difficult situations. It’s the kind of feeling you get when you know you can’t do the right thing, no matter what you do.

But being stuck between a rock and a hard place is not always a bad thing. Take, for example, the situation where you are being washed downstream by a very strong current. As you float helplessly down the river, you reach out for anything solid to grab onto. At this point, coming to a rock that you can hold onto against the raging current could be the very thing that saves your life.

This is the way David feels about God. Over the last few months that we’ve been looking at the books of 1 & 2 Samuel, we’ve seen David going through all sorts of difficult times. He’s had family troubles, political troubles and serious threats to his life.

So, how has David survived through all these difficulties? In 2 Sam 22:2 he tells us, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and horn of my salvation.”

In the midst of all the swirling tempests of life, David has found it essential to be able to base his life on something (or rather someone) solid; someone who would never let him down; someone who has the power to overcome any situation & who loves him enough to want to do what’s best for him. And as he’s turned to, and relied on God, he has experienced God’s salvation and strength.

But it’s not just King David that can turn to God in this way. Jesus encourages us to “build our lives on the rock” in Mt 7:24,5. When we do that, he promises that though the “wind & waters” may swirl around us, we will not fall. Paul promises a similar thing when he says, “God is always at work for the good of those who love him (Rom 8:28).

So, if you’re in a “hard place”, turn to the rock that will give your life stability and strength & put your trust in the one who is always at work for your good.
