All Part of the Plan

Many people find the Bible hard to understand. It can seem like a disjointed set of ancient texts that have no relevance to today.
However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Despite the fact that the Bible writers came from many different eras and cultures, their writings still hold a powerful message for us in the 21st Century. And, far from being disjointed, they actually form one intricate storyline that traces the past, present & future realities for mankind.
Today’s passage (2 Samuel 7), is a perfect example of a piece in a very large puzzle that encapsulates both the history & future of humanity.
In response to the fall of Adam and Eve, & the subsequent downward spiral of the human race, God chose one man (Abraham) & made him some huge promises. He promised him that from him would come a great nation; this nation would inhabit a beautiful and bountiful land; & through this nation, all people on earth would be blessed.
By the time of King David, it seems that these promises were well on the way to coming true. Abraham’s descendants were now the nation Israel & they were now in possession of the Promised Land. God had richly blessed them & would continue to do so. How exactly God was planning to bless the whole world through them was less than clear however. This is where 2 Sam 7 comes in.
In short, God makes another promise, not to a Bedouin farmer this time, but to the King of Israel. He promises that “your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.” God promises that David’s family line will rule forever. And it is through this family line that a special king will come. This king will be called “the Son of God”, & it is he that will rule on David’s throne forever. It is this king that will bring God’s blessings to the whole world, as the whole world comes to him and bows before him in worship.
This king, Jesus, has already come to establish his throne, and now his blessings are open to all people. Indeed, peoples from every country on the face of the earth have heard the name of this king and already bow their knee to him. And we look forward to the day when this king will return and all people will see him for who he truly is. On that day, everyone will bow down and worship the king who will rule forever.
