You are probably aware that the Sydney Anglican Diocesan Synod has been on this week. Indeed, you may have heard or read reports that claim the church is in dire financial trouble. You can’t, of course, believe everything you read. I thought I’d just give you some of the highlights of this week at Synod:
- Financial problems – It is certainly true that the Diocese has suffered some quite significant financial losses. However, it is not true to say the Diocese is “crying poor”. There have been some unwise decisions made, and these, when combined with the impact of the GFC, have resulted in the financial difficulties. The fact that diocesan grants will certainly effect some churches that rely on grants to support their ministry & we have been asked to think and pray about how we can help our Christian brothers and sisters.
- SRE – We were challenged to consider the threats to SRE posed by the proposed ethics classes in State Primary Schools, but also had clarified for us some of the misinformation that has been propagated by the media. This was particularly significant given the LEPS P & C will be discussing this issue at its meeting this week… in fact, let me encourage all parents with students at LEPS to come along and give their input to the discussion.
- Connect 09 – we were both encouraged and challenged by the report on Connect 09. It was great to hear of the many great opportunities that were taken up last year to tell the people of Sydney the good news of Jesus Christ. However, it did make me think of how we as a church could be more focused on this for our own area. The challenge will be there for us in the coming years to get on board with the re-branded “Connect For Life”.
- Finally, let me encourage you to jump onto the Sydney Anglicans website and listen to Peter Jensen’s Presidential address – it was both stimulating and insightful.
