Baby News

We’ve all been very excited over the last couple of weeks to hear of Peter and Laura’s news about their new baby, due in November. It’s a very exciting time in the life of any family, and we join together in thanking God & praying for the health of both Laura and the baby.

In today’s passage we eavesdrop on a prayer of praise from a young mother who has had her first child. Hannah had been unable to have children for a very long time. That was hard enough, but what made matters worse was that her husband had another wife who seemed to have no trouble popping out little ones (and didn’t she let her know it)!

But finally God answered Hannah’s prayers and she gave birth to a son. And this was no ordinary child. Samuel was to grow up to help usher in the first kings of Israel, which would eventually lay the path for Jesus, God’s ultimate king.

It’s interesting that there is a pattern that seems to occur again and again in Scripture of unusual, or even miraculous, births that introduce a new chapter of God’s dealings with his people. For instance, Abraham and Sarah were promised great things by God, but these promises only began to be fulfilled after a long and arduous wait for a son (Isaac). When Israel were trapped in slavery in Egypt, God acted to miraculously save a small baby who had been placed in a basket in a river (Moses of course). And here again, we see God bringing a child in a miraculous answer to prayer as part of his plan to bring a king to Israel.

All of this is meant to prepare us for the most miraculous birth of all, when an angel appeared to a young virgin, named Mary, and told her she would have a child by the Holy Spirit. This baby would usher in the kingdom of God, in which all people have the opportunity to be rescued from this world of sin and death. God again acts to save his people through the amazing birth of a young boy.
