It’s A Must!

Whenever you become part of something new, there are certain things you need to do. For instance, when you join a sports team, you need to come to training; when you start to play a new instrument, you need to practice; when you start a new job, you need to turn up on time; when you start a new course, you need to study (some of these things will come as news to some people!). Everything we do has implications for how we live.

Today we start a new series looking at the Gospel of Luke. However, we will be looking at it from a slightly unusual angle. The basis for our series is a little greek word “dei”, which basically means “it is necessary” or “must”. It points to things that are essential. This little greek word is not too special in some respects, except for the fact that it occurs more times in Luke’s gospel than anywhere else in the New Testament (40 out of the 100 or so times it is used occur in Luke’s books!).

During this series, we’ll be looking at the aspects of Jesus’ ministry that were an essential part of who he is and what he came to do. As we do so, we’ll see that there are some things that are “necessary” for us to believe and do if we are to follow Jesus. Jesus came to save us and restore us to a right relationship with his Father, but to do that, there were things he had to do: he had to become human like us, he had to live a sinless life, he had to give his life for us & he had to rise again.

As we look at the parts of Jesus ministry that were essential for him to achieve his goal, we’ll gain a deeper understanding of the gospel message we believe in & we’ll be challenged about how we are to respond to that message.

So, to begin with, let me challenge you to read again through the gospel of Luke. Keep an eye out for the “essentials” of the gospel and for how you “must” respond to it. It’s a must!
