Is God a Delusion?

If this is your first time with us, I would like to give you a very warm welcome. We’re very happy you have been able to join us.

Today’s topic is one that it is important for all people to consider – is there really a God? Our church meets each week on the assumption that there is a God, so it would be rather helpful to know if we were all wasting our time!

Richard Dawkins, author of “The God Delusion”, argues that there is no God and that the evidence of the scientific world is all that is needed to understand the world and ourselves. He claims that belief in God is a merely a delusion that flies in the face of the evidence. He’s right in saying that it is impossible to prove that God exists (as it is impossible to prove he doesn’t).

The question of evidence, however, is an important one. The Christian is not called to throw out their brain to believe in God, in fact, we are called to “love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind and strength” (Dt 6:4-6). So, is there any evidence for the existence of God? Here are just a few to think through:

  • How do you explain the existence of this incredible world? The way the different animals, plants and environments live in such delicate balance seems to suggest a designer behind them.
  • Why can’t science meet our deepest needs? Sure science may have a lot to tell us about how our world works and came to be as it is, but it cannot provide meaning and purpose for our lives. It cannot explain “love”, “mercy” or “altruism”. It cannot make us feel content or loved or worthwhile as people.
  • How do you explain Jesus death and resurrection? This is surely the most significant piece of evidence. If Jesus did not rise from the dead (the bible says), then faith is futile. The resurrection of Jesus is proof that Jesus is who he says he is, and that he can do what he said he came to do.

Let me encourage you to consider the evidence. Most importantly, look at the life of Jesus and consider the significance of his resurrection. If you do, I think you’ll see that God is not a delusion, but a solution to the meaning of life and eternity.
