Here I am Lord. Send me!

I wonder if you were challenged by Isaiah’s words in last Sunday’s passage (Isaiah 6:8).

Isaiah had caught a vision of the power and majesty of God; he had seen His holiness and recognized his own sinfulness; he had experienced the healing power of God’s forgiveness; & now God was looking for someone to perform a task for him. Quick as you like, Isaiah sticks up his hand and says, “Here I am Lord. Send me.” And God did indeed send him with a message of judgment and hope for God’s people who had turned away from Him.

But it caused me to wonder how readily we would stick our hand up for such a mission. After all, we have experienced many of the same wonders that Isaiah experienced. We can glimpse the power and majesty of God as we look at what He’s made and as we read His word, which describes how He made the world with just a word and how He rules in power in heaven. We can understand the incredible holiness of God, in whom there is no evil thought or action. We have recognized our own sinfulness and our need of His mercy and forgiveness. And we too have tasted the incredible grace of God that has been poured out on us through the death of His Son Jesus. Indeed, we have the privilege of seeing the whole picture of God’s revelation of Himself and His plans which find their fulfillment in Christ. We have seen God in the flesh, who gave up all the glory of heaven so that we might be set free.

And so how do we respond to God’s call? Sure, we aren’t sent out to proclaim the same message of judgment that Isaiah did to his own people, but we are called to take part in God’s mission to bring salvation to the world. As we saw recently in the book of Acts, we are called to be God’s witnesses to the ends of the earth. How have you responded to that call? Are you seeking to shine the light of God’s grace in your workplace, or among your neighbours & friends? The “Jesus All About Life” campaign gives us the perfect opportunity to put our words into action. Here’s three actions to take:

  1. Pray that God will open doors for you to talk about your faith
  2. Look for opportunities this week to ask people what they think of the TV commercials
  3. Invite your friends to one of the special “Bring a Friend” services at church in the coming weeks

Let’s encourage each other to make the most of this opportunity that God has given us and say, “Here I am Lord, send me!”
