Ideas for Connecting

2009 is more than half over now & we’ve heard a fair bit about “Connect 09”. It seems to me to be a good time to evaluate how it’s going. What, after all, did we hope to achieve through all this? Were you expecting huge changes, or dynamic outreach events that drew people in their thousands?

As far as I’m concerned, my expectations have been far more modest. My hope and prayer for this year has always been that it will be more like a turning point than a climax. In other words, if we achieve nothing else this year, I hope that evangelism will become something that is firmly on our agenda. I hope that our eyes will be opened to the people around us in such a way that we see their need for Jesus, and are moved to prayer and action to draw them closer to him.

We’ve seen from God’s word that we are part of a God-ordained mission to be his witnesses in the world. We’ve been challenged to grow in love for those who live around us and those we have contact with. Today we will be encouraged again to pray that God will move in people’s hearts.

So, I wonder what impact this year has had on you. How has your thinking been changed with regard to the non-Christians around you? Have you been activated to pray for your neighbours and friends? What have you actually been involved in that helps to develop the connections you have with the people in our suburb? Perhaps you’ve invited the neighbours over for lunch; or you’ve brought them to the “Retrenchment Support Group”; or you’ve planned a “world’s biggest morning tea” by inviting friends into your home to raise money for Cancer Research; maybe you’ve brought them to church; or is there something else?

It would be really encouraging to hear stories of how you’ve taken “Connect 09” on board. Perhaps you could put it as “News” on the St Peters Website, or put a little notice in the newssheet, or even get up in church to share a little of what God’s been doing in your life?

“Connect 09” is not simply about doing great things in 2009. Let’s make it a turning point in the way we operate as a church and as individuals. Let’s keep encouraging each other to take that bold step into our world, to be God’s witnesses, and to introduce others to our Lord and Saviour.
