St Peter's on Mission

You’ll be aware that we’ve been thinking a lot about mission recently. Connect 09 has challenged us all to think beyond ourselves and the four walls of St Peter’s to the community around us, in particular how we can bring the good news of Jesus to them.
At Parish Council on Tuesday night we spent a fair bit of time discussing our involvement in worldwide mission. This has been a real strength of St Peter’s for many years as we’ve prayed for, supported and even sent people to the mission field.
However, of late it has become clear that less and less people have been actively involved in mission. As a result we have determined to change the way we look at mission, in an effort to make it easier for us all to take an active interest in our mission partners around the world.
Here are some of the ideas we’ve had:
- We want to develop meaningful two-way partnerships with our link missionaries that involve regular communication and prayer both ways.
- We want to encourage practical involvement in the lives of missionaries through sending significant sums of money as well as physical assistance.
- We will reduce the number of link missionaries to 4 or 5 (rather than over 10), with each congregation focusing on just one or two with whom they have established connections.
- We want to leave a portion of the mission budget to use to support members of our current congregations getting involved in mission in Australia and beyond.
If we are to implement these ideas, it will necessitate cutting our ties with many of our present missionaries (though most are only receiving minimal financial and other support). If you have any feedback on these ideas, or any ideas about which missionaries you have strong connections with, please let us know.
