Easter

Someone has calculated that each hour of every day, 5417 people die. We can avoid lots of things in life but death is not one of them. Some people fear death. It signifies a dark emptiness, a fearsome unknown. Typified by Woody Allen, who once said that while he didn’t fear his own death, he just didn’t want to be there when it happened. Some ignore it, hoping that not thinking about it might somehow make it go away.

Easter means we need not adopt either of those futile alternatives. Since Jesus rose from death, those who are connected to him by personal trust also rise from death. Jesus’ resurrection doesn’t mean we won’t one day draw our last breath on earth. It means that physical death won’t be the end. It is rather a beginning: a new chapter in what has become our never-ending story.

Trusting in the mercies of Jesus means we don’t suffer the consequences of death: estrangement from God who is the source of life. We don’t stay dead. Because of Easter, death is no longer fatal.

Blessings
