Bridge Across the Gap

In September 1974, stunt man Evil Knievel attempted to jump over Snake River Canyon in the USA. He would be riding a motorbike for the occasion. He roared up to the edge of the chasm and soared into space. It looked promising, but he didn’t quite make it. He got close, but close enough was not good enough. Fortunately he had a parachute attached, so he floated to the bottom of the canyon with only his pride injured.
Human beings are separated from God because of our imperfections. We might be very good people, but it isn’t enough to relate to perfect God. Near enough isn’t good enough. That’s why Christians make such a fuss about Jesus. He was good enough for God and invites us to trust his perfect goodness rather than rely on our own relative goodness.
We need not be like showy stuntmen trying to get right with God by our own heroic efforts. God himself has provided a bridge across the gap. It is a bridge in the shape of a cross.
