Prepare for the King's Coming

Once there was a king who wanted to show his subjects how much he cared for them. So he told his courtiers to find the poorest peron in the kingdom and tell that person he would pay them a visit. Eventually a very poor widow was found, living in the farthest corner of the land. Arrangements were made for the royal visit but the woman kept putting it off. Messengers from the king sent to find out about the delay. They found the woman frantically trying to improve her house and scratch up the resources she felt she needed to entertain such an important person as the king. Sadly, her efforts to be worthy of the royal visit made the royal visit impossible. She didn’t dare meet the king just as she was, so the king was powerless to meet her.
The living God wants to meet us and change us. If we figure we have to do a lot of self-improvement before letting him into our lives, we are missing the whole point. As the old hym says, Just as I am I come to God. We can never make ourselves worthy of God by a bit of moral housekeeping. We instead helplessly trust in the worth of Jesus and celebrate the fact that he makes us worthy.
