The Big Day In

Today is an exciting day! Today we join together with all the congregations of all the Anglican churches across the Diocese of Sydney in marking the official start of Connect 09.

But why do we have to go to so much trouble? Surely we could all mark the beginning of this year in our own way?

One of the great strengths of the Connect 09 campaign is that it is reminding us that although, in some ways, we stand alone in our Christian walk, we are actually part of something bigger – bigger even than just our local church. It’s encouraging to realise that on any given Sunday, there are Christians just like us gathering together to sing God’s praises, to present their prayers to Him and to hear Him speak through his Word.

Today, we will combine with a subset of these Christians to celebrate God’s goodness to us and to set out together to serve Him. For it is not just on Sunday that we have common ground with other believers. Every day of the week, thousands of Christians head off to work, or study, or to social clubs and events to try to live a life that is honouring to God. These Christians face the same pressures and temptations that are common to us. They find it just as difficult to talk to their friends about their faith. They find it just as difficult to live lives that stand out from the crowd. And they feel just as much in the minority as we do.

And yet they, like us are part of God’s great plan to reach our world with the gospel. We are not alone in this cause. Together with God’s Holy Spirit, we can make a huge impact on our city for Jesus. And today we gather to celebrate this goal, to encourage one another to persevere & to move forward together into God’s great mission field, seeking to connect with them, so they connect with Christ. Now that’s exciting!
