Let's start from the very beginning

It’s a very good place to start (so I’m told)!

Well, the year has really begun. School is back, holidays are a distant memory and we are all making plans and filling our diaries for the new year. This is a perfect time for us to go back to the beginning … of our faith.

Today we will be reminded of where our faith and hope began – the cross of Christ. It’s easy to forget, amidst the hurly-burly of modern life that the most important event of all history took place almost 2000 years ago, & that without Christ’s act of grace and love, we would be eternally lost.

Some might say that we don’t need to keep going back over the gospel again, that we should be getting onto some of the “more meaty” stuff, but I disagree. It is important to set the year off on the right foot, to re-establish the foundation of our lives, so we might set the course of our year according to God’s compass, not our own.

Nothing could be more important for us than to be reminded of God’s boundless grace, a grace that achieves our salvation and guides and comforts us through our daily Christian lives. Paul reminds us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:23-24).

We are all totally dependent on God for our salvation, but also for the grace to live our lives according to his plan. Let’s begin our year as we mean to go on – clinging to the cross of Christ and proclaiming his name to all.
