Using My Gifts

In last week’s passage, we thought a little bit about the gifts God gives us & how we can use them for him.
One of the most common things that is said to me when talking about gifts is, “But I don’t think I have any gifts”, or “I don’t know what my gifts are”. So, how do we work out what gifts God has given us to you for him? Here are some suggestions:
- Think about the things you are naturally good at, or enjoy doing. Can you talk the leg off a chair underwater? Are you good at getting things organized? Are you a good friend? Is music something you love? Is there a way you can use these things to serve God and his people?
- What things have you tried and seen good things happen? Have you made a meal for someone that they really appreciated? Have you been a good listening ear for someone in trouble? Have you been able to teach a skill or concept to someone in a way they could really grasp? If you havent tried anything, how about giving something and go and seeing what happens?
- Talk to someone you respect who knows your strengths and weaknesses. What do they think you are good at? What do they suggest you try?
- Check your heart. Peter says in today’s passage that elders should perform their roles “not because you must, but because you are willing” (1 Peter 5:2). I think the same goes for all gifts. We must serve one another because we have a heart to serve, not because we are forced or cajoled into it. Often we shy away from using our gifts because, quite frankly, we don’t want to” it’s too much effort. We need to examine our hearts and see if we have the heart of a servant. If we do, I’m sure God will open up avenues for us to serve him with the gifts he has given us.
