I Am the Light of the World

A recent article reported, “The blind will be able to see the light with a new bionic eye implant which is said to be available within 2 years. The development of the bionic eye will at last restore sight to those who suffer Macular Degeneration and other eye diseases. The prototype high tech implant will be fitted to approx 50 to 75 patients, now that U.S. researchers have been given the go ahead. The bionic eye device is called The Argus II which is a spectacle mounted camera that sends visual information to electrodes in the eye.”
It is amazing what our technology can do. It is certainly a far cry from Jesus spitting in dirt and making mud to put on a blind man’s eyes. But with all our technology, it is still be far less effective than what Jesus did with a little dirt and spit. Even the miracle of technology cannot hold a candle to the miracles of Jesus.
In today’s passage from John 9, though we see Jesus restore sight to a man who was born blind, this is not the greatest miracle that is there. You see, though this man had never seen physically, he had much better eyesight than those around him. They were so blinded to Jesus’ identity that they labelled him a “sinner” for breaking some of their minuscule rules, but the blind man could see that he was someone from God – at least a prophet, maybe something more.
Jesus wasn’t born to be the next “Fred Hollows”, going around restoring people’s physical eyesight. He had something much more significant in mind – to cure people’s spiritual eyesight. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world”. He came to show people the way to God, indeed to open that way up for them. It is only as we see Jesus as only way to God that we will ever truly “see”.
