Remember Remember

When I was a kid, we had a great game called “Remember, Remember”, in which you spread out a whole set of cards upside down on a table and turned over two at a time, trying to find a matching pair. It will surprise some of you, who know about my terrible memory, that I actually used to really enjoy playing and wasn’t too bad at it!
It is important to have a good memory when it comes to passing exams, going for a driver’s license or when it comes up towards an anniversary, but it is also really important to have a good memory as a Christian. In particular, God calls us to look back and remember all the good things he has done for us.
From the time of Moses, the people of God were told to look back and remember how God saved them out of Egypt and through the Red Sea. It was so important that God gave them a meal (the Passover) to help them remember… (“maybe if they do something physical, it will jog their memory”). This, of course, was not just an end in itself, the goal was that the Israelites would remember to thank God for his goodness to them and to make sure they were living in the present in a way that was honouring to him.
In the New Testament, memory is just as important. Again and again, Christians are encouraged to look back and remember God’s goodness, particularly in sending his Son to die on a cross for our sins. And once again, God sees this as so important that he gave us a meal (the Lord’s Supper) to help us remember… (“maybe if we do something physical, it will jog our memory”). This, of course, is not an end in itself, the goal is that we would remember to thank God for his goodness to us and to make sure we live in the present in a way that is honouring to him.
The end of the year is a good time to remember all that God has done over the last 12 months. He’s been with us in the good times and the bad, he’s taught us from his word, he’s answered our prayers & he’s been changing us to be more like his Son. And Christmas is the perfect time to remember when this Son of God gave up all the glory of heaven to become a small child, so that we might become God’s children too.
So, let’s play “Remember, Remember” this Christmas!
