Welcome to 2012

Well, the “summer” holidays have come to an end, school is back, university students are contemplating the possibility of going back sometime soon, and family life is beginning to get back to “normal”. I hope and pray that you have all had a refreshing break and are looking forward to what the new year might hold.

The start of a new year is always a good time to re-assess priorities and activities. Perhaps you’ve determined to “get fit” this year, or to spend more time with the kids or grandkids, to eat more healthily, or to start a new course or job. I hope that you’ve also had time to think about what you hope to achieve in your walk with God this year.

Just like any other aspect of our lives, we need to be deliberate when it comes to the progress of our faith. It was Einstein who said that “the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again but to expect a different result”. If we want to grow in our relationship with God, to become more like Jesus, we will need to make choices that will help us to do that. So, for instance, you may decide to commit to a Bible Study group for the first time, or to take a short time at the start of each day to read the Bible and pray, or perhaps to give Scripture teaching a go, or to ask a couple of people to get together one morning each week to pray. You might choose to buy some Christian music to listen to while you’re going for a run, or to download podcasts of sermons to listen to on the train on the way to work. Have you read any good Christian books recently? Why not borrow one from the library at the back of the church? Maybe you need to make choices that will make it possible to be at church more regularly, or to spend time praying with the kids.

The start of a new year is the perfect time to put in place habits that will help us move closer to God, rather than away from him. May 2012 be the year when we become like the writer of Psalm 1 whose “delight is in the law of the Lord”.

We started last week a short series looking at some of the trappings of the Christmas season. We’ve looked at the Christmas Tree & today we will be thinking about Christmas Lights. Here are a couple of others to get you thinking: Candy Canes – were purportedly designed by a Candy

Christmas Trappings

The Christmas Season has hit with a vengeance. The shops are full of Christmas Trees, tinsel, shining baubles, Santas, reindeers and presents with crisp bows on top. But that’s not all, of course, our letter-boxes are overflowing with Christmas catalogues describing the latest bargains on everything from hams to holidays. To make

Some of you may know that last Sunday was the “first Sunday in Advent”. Many of you will have heard of “Advent” (even if only through “Advent Calendars”), but my guess is that many won’t know what it’s about. So, let me enlighten you. The word “advent” means “coming” & it

Jesus and Money

Christians have often been accused of only being interested in money. This caricature is not helped by the many “TV Evangelists” who offer profound blessing to those who will send in their cheque or money order to support their ministry. On top of this, the Western Church is seen to

Famine in Africa

0 comments | Posted by Steven Layson on 20 Nov 2011 in From Steve's Study ::

We have all seen pictures & statistics depicting the terrible famine in the horn of Africa. Although these images have drifted out of the headlines lately, the tragedy continues unabated. According to the US state department, up to 7.4 in every 10,000 people are dying every day… over 29,000 children
